Did you enjoy last week’s post about Peanuts Comic Strip Day? Today I’m highlighting another fun and little-known holiday to share with your residents. World Egg Day is celebrated on the second Friday in October, so in 2018 it falls on October 12.
Share egg trivia and jokes
Check out the Chandran’s Poultry website where you’ll find everything you could possibly want to know about eggs. For example, did you know that a mother hen turns her eggs about 50 times a day?
You’ll also want to share these silly egg jokes from the Egg Farmers of Alberta. (How do comedians like their eggs? Funny side up!)
Sponsor an egg coloring contest
This isn’t just for Easter! Pass out egg coloring pages and invite employees to decorate them for World Egg Day. Next, ask residents to vote for the best artistic designs. Offer egg-themed prizes such as egg-shaped candy, egg cooking gadgets, or a gift certificate to a local restaurant that serves eggs.
Learn creative cooking ideas
Invite a local chef to come to your nursing home and do an egg cooking demonstration for your residents. I love this activity because eggs are so versatile, and you can prepare them in an endless variety of creative ways. (Just be sure that any eggs consumed by your residents meet health regulations.)
If you don’t have access to a professional chef, I highly recommend this book: The Farmstead Egg Guide And Cookbook. Besides delicious and creative recipes, the book also offers expert advice on raising backyard chickens–a growing trend in many nursing homes!
Get up and dance
World Egg Day won’t be complete without the Chicken Dance. Just in case you’re not familiar with this quirky dance, you can check out this YouTube video for easy instructions.
The dance is even more fun if your residents and the nursing home staff dress up as chickens for the day! You can also offer prizes for the best costume and the best & worst dancer.
Enjoy egg-themed crafts
The Felt Magnet website offers a terrific array of crafts to make using plastic eggs. While these crafts are meant for Easter, most of them can be done at any time of the year, including World Egg Day. Your residents will enjoy the projects even more if kids from your childcare center join them!
