October 2 marks the anniversary of the day Charles M. Schulz’s infamous comic strip first appeared in newspapers in 1950. Peanuts comic strips were translated into 21 languages and featured in 2600 newspapers in 75 countries. So, you’re going to have a difficult time finding a resident who isn’t familiar with the fun characters in this popular comic strip.
Here’s how to make Peanuts Comic Strip Day a memorable event for your residents:
Dress The Part
Encourage residents and staff to dress like their favorite Peanuts character. Invite everyone to vote for the best costume and provide theme-related prizes. Consider a Snoopy stuffed animal, a Peanuts calendar, or a Linus Christmas ornament.
It’s also fun to have a volunteer dress up in a Peanuts character costume and come in to visit the residents. (Snoopy seems to be the favorite.) Be sure to have a camera available for photo opportunities.
Learn Peanuts History
The Northern Connection website offers a terrific summary of Peanuts history, as well as a fun trivia quiz. Your residents will also enjoy hearing these 10 famous quotes from Peanuts characters.
While they’re learning about Peanuts history, your residents can share the meal Snoopy once served for Thanksgiving dinner: buttered toast, jelly beans, pretzel sticks, and popcorn. Okay, that sounds pretty awful. Better yet, check out Pinterest for an amazing array of fun Peanuts-themed food ideas.
Create A Character
Exercise your creativity by helping your residents learn to draw Peanuts characters. Check out this excellent How To Draw website. Better yet, invite a local artist to come in and present a drawing class for your residents.
Enjoy A Movie
You simply can’t celebrate Peanuts Comic Strip Day without showing one of these all-time favorite classic Peanuts movies:
- It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
- Charlie Brown’s All-Stars
- It Was My Best Birthday Ever, Charlie Brown
- You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown
- Someday You’ll Find Her, Charlie Brown
