This week I’m featuring special activities for you to share with your residents in November. Did you catch Tuesday’s article about America Recycles Day?
Today we’re looking at Mickey Mouse’s birthday. Would you believe Mickey Mouse is turning 90 on November 18? That’s a good reason to celebrate!
Mickey Mouse’s birthday might sound like an activity for children. However, I know many of your residents will also enjoy celebrating Mickey’s special day.
After all, nearly everyone has at least one fond memory of Mickey Mouse. Perhaps it was a trip to Disneyland, a favorite toy, or a cartoon they enjoyed as a child.
Learn a bit of history
Check out this biography website to learn all about the history of Mickey Mouse. For example, did you know that Mickey’s original name was Mortimer Mouse?
Dress the part
I always love opportunities for employees to join residents in a holiday celebration. On November 18, encourage your staff to dress up as their favorite Disney character.
Invite residents to vote for their favorite costumes, then offer small Disney-themed prizes. Socks, a mug, or a stuffed animal are fun options.
Enjoy a snack
I’ll bet most of your residents have eaten goldfish crackers at one time or another. Their maker, Pepperidge Farm, is helping to celebrate Mickey’s 90th birthday by creating crackers in the shape of Mickey.
Nabisco is also getting in on the action by releasing limited-edition birthday cake flavored Oreo cookies. Nearly everyone has eaten Oreo cookies, so I know residents will get a kick out of taste-testing this new flavor.
And, of course, no birthday celebration is complete without a cake. You’ll find tons of ideas for Mickey’s birthday cake on Pinterest.
Share memories
Encourage residents to reminisce about their memories of Mickey Mouse and his friends. These are a few questions you can ask:
- Have you ever visited Disneyland or Disney World? What was your favorite memory?
- Did you own any Mickey Mouse toys when you were a child? Do you still have any of them?
- Have you ever seen Mickey’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame?
- Do you remember singing the Mickey Mouse song?
- Did you ever watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on TV as a child?
- Have you ever seen Walt Disney in person?
- Did you own a Mickey Mouse watch as a child?
- Do you remember the Mickey Mouse cartoon in the newspaper?
Please share how you plan to celebrate Mickey’s 90th birthday at your nursing home!
