Did your residents have fun planning activities for Emma M. Nutt Day? Today we’ll look at another little-known holiday I know you’ll enjoy in September.
If you ask your residents, I’m sure most of them are familiar with the legend of Johnny Appleseed. But, did you know he was a real person? We celebrate his life on September 26, the date he was born in 1774.
Many myths about Johnny Appleseed have developed over the years. You can help your residents separate fact from fiction by reading this excellent article from the Washington Apple Commission.
Today I’m sharing several activities for your residents to enjoy on Johnny Appleseed Day. If you think of other ideas, please share them with everyone in the comment section!
Exercise your brain
- Check out these fun apple facts. For example, did you know that apples are part of the rose family?
- Enjoy a few good laughs with these silly apple jokes.
- Learn all about the 18 most common varieties of apples. (Over 7500 varieties are grown throughout the world!)
Share a meal
You simply can’t celebrate Johnny Appleseed Day without cooking a meal that includes a dish or two made of apples. Try one of your favorite recipes or check out The Apple Cookbook: 125 Freshly Picked Recipes.
Before beginning your meal, share what many of your residents will remember as the Johnny Appleseed Table Grace. Did any of you sing this song at summer camp when you were young?
Be creative
The possibilities are endless for apple-themed crafts. I love the ideas on the Craft Train website. These projects are especially enjoyable if you have a childcare center in your nursing home. Then you can invite the children to join in on the fun!
