Before shoeboxes are sent overseas they need to be inspected and prepared for shipment. About 80,000 people are needed annually to help with this enormous project.

If you’re interested in helping at an Operation Christmas Child processing center, check out this link. These centers are located in Atlanta, Boone (NC), Baltimore, Charlotte, Denver, Dallas/Fort Worth, Minneapolis, and Southern California.

A couple of people have commented on my use of the words “nursing home” and “resident” on my blog. I appreciate this feedback because I gave a lot of thought to the words I should use as I was developing my blog.

These are some of the words I considered to describe a nursing home:

• Long-term care facility: This doesn’t seem quite right since nowadays it’s common to go to a nursing home for short-term rehab.
• Senior living facility: Many of the people who live at a nursing home aren’t seniors. One nursing home in my state even cared for a baby at one time.
• Retirement community: Most people don’t move to a nursing home when they retire.
• Rest home: I hope the residents are doing a lot more than just resting!

A friend sent me a link to this wonderful article about a nursing home that participates in Operation Christmas Child every year. Presbyterian Homes, with headquarters in Minnesota, has been packing shoeboxes for 21 years. Wow! I especially like how the residents make toys and also knit & crochet items for the children throughout the year.

I’m so excited about a new feature you’ll see on my blog beginning in September. One of the best ways we can enhance the lives of our nursing home residents is by sharing our outstanding ideas.

As I search the Internet for possible topics for my blog, I often come across wonderful things that are happening at individual nursing homes. Many of these ideas have such a positive impact on the lives of residents. But sometimes I wonder if people in other parts of the country (or world) know about these great ideas. We need to spread the word!
