how to enjoy your work

When I talk with people who work in nursing homes or other long-term care settings, it’s not unusual to hear words of discouragement. While this line of work is incredibly rewarding, there are also times when it drains our souls.

Besides the physical toll it takes on our bodies, this type of work is emotionally demanding. It’s hard to watch the residents we care about as they struggle with pain, loss, confusion, and other enormous challenges.

Then there are the regulations, policies, and funding restrictions that seem to get in the way of providing good care. In addition, we interact with families who seem impossible to please as they struggle with their own hurts.

Nursing Home Residents Give Back

July 18, 2018 by Diane Leave a Comment

Someone posted this terrific video on LinkedIn the other day. I hope you’ll take just 3 minutes out of your day to watch it.

Isn’t this a fun idea? But, I’ll bet you’re wondering what this video has to do with nursing homes.

Well, I think it would be a hoot to invite a group of residents to load up your facility van, then go out and do what these people did. Residents would love this opportunity to brighten someone’s day, and I know they would enjoy being a part of a big surprise.

quotes about nursing homes

Those of you who have been with me for a long time know that I love to read and collect quotes. It seems like many of my readers enjoy quotes, too, because my post about Quotes For Caregivers was shared numerous times.

This month I thought it would be interesting to find quotes about nursing homes to share with you. Sadly, I didn’t find a lot of quotes on this topic and most of them were quite negative.

Interestingly, I did discover a few quotes from famous people that speak of positive and influential experiences with nursing homes during their youth. These are the ones I’m happy to share with you today:

Promoting Dignity In The Nursing Home

nursing home dignity

When I worked as a nurse manager in a nursing home, one of my responsibilities was to plan quarterly in-services for staff who worked on our memory care unit. I didn’t want these mandatory classes to be tedious events that employees dreaded sitting through at the end of a long shift. Obviously, the presentations needed to be helpful and enjoyable.

Knowing that staff would grow tired of listening to me teach all of these in-services, I occasionally looked for videos to share. But it was tough to find high-quality products back in those days.

Recently I came upon this YouTube video, and I wish I had found it years ago. I think this is a perfect resource to help people understand what it feels like to live in a nursing home.
