Wow, what a year we just finished! The challenges of 2020 were different for each of us, but the pandemic left no one untouched. Yet, despite the many challenges, you stepped up to the plate and did your best to protect and care for your residents.

During November, senior living communities across the country will celebrate Caregiver Appreciation Month. I hope today’s article prompts us to make a habit of showing appreciation for a loved one’s caregivers, not only during November but throughout the entire year.

Because of social distancing, verbalizing thanks to a loved one’s caregivers becomes more difficult. We might only communicate with staff through brief phone calls or video visits. This makes it harder to get to know the caregivers and form relationships with them.

Someone said we will all need counseling when this is over. I’m not sure we don’t all need counseling now.

I know death comes with my job. I realize my residents are living out their last years, and I’m lucky enough to be part of their journey.

I get to know my residents. They tell me about their families and share stories about the past. I watch them smile and laugh because they’re happy, and I hug them when they’re sad.

My residents get to know me and my family. They ask about my girls. They aren’t just residents; they’re my people.
