The words "Happy New Year" written in multi-colored words.

The past couple of years have been difficult for many people. I don’t know anyone that COVID hasn’t touched, in one way or another. Then there’s the unstable economy, political unrest, and our unique individual challenges. (For me, that means cancer.)

It would be easy to approach the new year with a “bah humbug” attitude, anticipating another discouraging year. However, I’m choosing to believe 2023 will be a much better year. I hope you’ll join me.

To help get us off to a good start, I’m sharing 16 of my favorite quotes about the new year. Please share them with your residents, too!

Thanksgiving At The Nursing Home

Several people gathered around a Thanksgiving meal.

Many of you know how much I love Thanksgiving. And I often feel frustrated when I see this beautiful holiday getting lost in the shuffle between Halloween and Christmas. I believe it’s so important to pause on this special day and give thanks for our many blessings.

Much of my belief system about Thanksgiving comes from my childhood. While other holidays involved our more immediate family, Thanksgiving was different. My parents invited a hodgepodge of people to our home who had nowhere else to go for dinner. This odd menagerie of people got together for a wonderful meal, laughter, and great conversation.

Have you ever sat in a church service and felt like the pastor was talking directly to you? This happened to me back in May. Let me explain.

Ever since I made a new year’s resolution to do more acts of kindness this year, an idea had been floating around in my head. I wanted to find a way to express gratitude to people who have made a positive difference in my life over the decades. Perhaps, I decided, I could do this by writing a thank-you note to someone every day for one month.

Two people jumping for joy against a setting sun

The other day, I was updating old blog posts when I came upon a series of articles I wrote back in 2018. The series was about how to rekindle the joy in your work when your job no longer brings fulfillment.

As I read the third article in the series, I realized the topic is even more pertinent now than it was four years ago. That’s because the pandemic has resulted in what they often call “The Great Resignation”. People are quitting their jobs in record numbers.

If you’re thinking about a job change, I hope you’ll consider these important points before taking the plunge.

One of my New Year’s resolutions for 2022 is to do more acts of kindness throughout the year. In January, I chose one volunteer project to do from home each week. During February, I decided to reach out to specific people (or groups of people) whom I felt could use some kindness.

Ordinarily, I don’t broadcast the acts of kindness I do for other people. After all, anonymous acts can be the most fun of all. However, this year I’m sharing what I’m doing, hoping it will prompt my readers to reach out with acts of kindness of your own.

Here’s what I’ve been up to so far this month:
