The other day, I stumbled upon an article about a fascinating model of nursing home care in Sweden. I had never heard of Tubbemodellen before, and I loved what I was reading.

Named for the Swedish village in which it originated, Tubbemodellen serves residents in several nursing homes in Sweden. In addition, the concept has now has expanded to Belgium.

Each Tubbemodellen nursing home possesses a unique personality. However, all share these similar core philosophies:

If you didn’t read my last post, you might not know about the devastating fire that struck the nursing home where I volunteer. You can learn more details in this news report.

In the days following the fire, I’ve been thinking about all the fire training and drills we went through when I worked at the nursing home several years ago.

When the fire alarm sounded back in those days, I’ll admit that I rarely took it too seriously. That’s because it usually meant someone either burned toast in the coffee shop or microwave popcorn in the employee lounge.

My Heart Is Heavy Tonight

It is with a sad heart that I share today’s brief message. The nursing home where I volunteer broke out in flames this afternoon.

By the grace of God, and through the fantastic work of the staff and first responders, there were no injuries. All residents have safely evacuated.

People Who Go Above And Beyond

Yesterday, I was scouring the web looking for topic ideas for future blog posts. Soon, I came upon a fascinating thread of articles about a program at Life Care Centers of America. They call it “Whatever It Takes And Then Some.”

The program rewards employees who go above and beyond their job description in caring for residents, family members, and each other. Monthly and yearly winners receive a cash award besides being honored by management and co-workers.

As I read through the stories of the winners, it touched my heart to see the love and caring demonstrated by these employees. Today I want to share several of my favorites.
