Good News And Bad News

October 9, 2022 by Diane Leave a Comment

I’m so excited to let you know that the nursing home where I used to volunteer will reopen its doors on Thursday. Nearly three years have passed since a fire destroyed most of the building.

We’re all eager to explore this new state-of-the-art senior care community. And it will be such a joy to hear life echoing through the hallways once again.

My plan was to dive right in as a volunteer and come up with lots of fresh adventures to share with my readers. Unfortunately, this is not to be—at least not yet.

I’m super excited about a week coming up in early October. It’s called Active Aging Week, and I know it will provide a much-needed boost for your residents and staff as we come out of the COVID pandemic.

Active Aging Week is an annual celebration of the positive aspects of aging. It encourages people over the age of 50 to experience wellness in all aspects of life: physical, emotional, spiritual, social, vocational, environmental, and intellectual.

Developed in 2003 by the International Council On Active Aging, several countries now celebrate this important week. These include Australia, India, Ireland, the U.S.A., and Canada.

A group created in 1882, known as the Entertainment Community Fund, developed the home. As a nonprofit organization, the group helps support retired people in the performing arts and entertainment professions.

Last month, I shared three programs from other countries meant to enhance the lives of elders. They made for some interesting discussions! So, this week I searched to see what other ideas I could find. I think you’ll find these programs equally fascinating.

Senior Citizens Day

Have you ever heard of Palau? It’s a small country in the western Pacific with a population of about 18,000 people.

A unique feature of Palau is their celebration of Senior Citizens Day every year on May 5. The day remembers and honors the contributions of the nation’s seniors. Interestingly, the people of Palau consider a person to be a senior citizen at age 55.
