Wouldn’t it be fun if your volunteer group had lots of money to spend? Then you could purchase oodles of special items to enhance the lives of your residents.

A favorite fundraiser at our nursing home is the yard sale we’ve organized annually for many years. We use the money to purchase items to benefit our residents such as mobility equipment, furniture, landscaping items, and bathing supplies.

With the coming of spring, I’m beginning to see yard sale signs popping up around our neighborhood. So, it seems like a perfect time to re-post this popular article from last year.

Someone just asked you to approach businesses about donating door prizes for an upcoming event at your facility. Are you excited? Or perhaps you would prefer to make an appointment to go to the dentist? Most people feel intimidated by the thought of asking for donations, but it need not be this way.

As I’ve mentioned in previous articles, you usually see better attendance at your fundraising events if you give the attendees something in return. However, you don’t want to spend your precious funds on door prizes and gift baskets. That’s why it’s so essential to solicit these items from outside sources. I think bingo is the perfect nursing home fundraiser. Why? Because if the residents at your facility play bingo, then you already own the supplies and equipment you need. Simply invite your staff and their families and friends to come in for an evening of food and fun while supporting a great cause.

Before we continue, I have one important word of warning. Some localities consider a bingo fundraiser to be charitable gaming. Be sure to check local and state laws before you commit to this activity.

Pick the right date

We’ve made the mistake of scheduling a fundraiser on the same day as another big community event, so hardly anyone showed up for ours. Check with staff and review community calendars to assure there are no major conflicts.
