help nursing home residents sleep better

We all know what we feel like after spending a sleepless night tossing and turning in our beds. The next day we feel grumpy, groggy, unproductive, and maybe even a bit confused. So imagine what it’s like for a nursing home resident who sleeps poorly night after night. Today let’s look at some of the causes of insomnia and how we can help our residents enjoy healthy sleep.

Noises in the night

One of my roles as a volunteer is to sit with residents who are nearing death. Occasionally this involves spending time at the nursing home during the night shift. This experience makes me very aware of how noisy a nursing home can be at night.

nursing home rehab staff

We’re celebrating at our house this week! My daughter, Sarah, passed her national boards and will soon begin her career as a physical therapist. I’m so proud of her, and I’m excited to see what lies ahead as she goes out into the world to serve others.

With this in mind, I decided it’s a good time to write a post about the rehab staff we commonly see in nursing homes. I know there’s sometimes confusion as to who does what and where to go with questions about a resident’s therapy program.

managing pain in dementia

People living with a diagnosis of dementia don’t feel pain as much as the rest of us. Right? Unfortunately, many people still believe this myth.

While it may appear to be true, this is because the resident loses the ability to communicate the pain they’re feeling. They also forget how to ask for help when they’re in pain.

It’s so important for us to remember that someone with dementia can experience a toothache, arthritic pain, a headache, or any other pain just like the rest of us.

protect aging eyes

I’m honored to be a guest blogger for SixtyandMe.com. I decided to share this recent article with you since many of the residents you work with experience challenges with their vision.

As Audrey Hepburn once said, “The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides”. Our eyes and the vision that comes with them are a precious gift. We want to enjoy that gift for as many years as possible.

Unfortunately, as we age most of us experience declines in our visual acuity. Some of these declines are unavoidable due to risk factors such as genetics. However, many problems are successfully treated when diagnosed early. That’s why it’s so important to schedule routine eye exams even if you’re not experiencing problems with your vision.

missing items in nursing homes

First, I want to thank everyone who provided feedback when I asked for solutions to the problem of missing items in nursing homes. I learned a few new tricks, and I hope my readers will, too.

These are helpful suggestions that you shared:

Glasses

  • Many facilities take a close-up photo of each resident’s glasses upon admission. When a pair of glasses is found, they easily identify the owner through the picture.
