Do you know how to play a game of marbles? Even though marbles aren’t as popular now as they were years ago, I’ll bet you can find residents who know how to play.

Traditionally, Word Marbles Day takes place on Good Friday, so the date varies from one year to the next. That’s because it all began with a marbles tournament held near London on Good Friday in 1588.

In 2022, the event falls on April 15. However, you can always adjust the date if it interferes with your religious Good Friday activities.

As you prepare your activity calendars for March, I hope you’ll include National Crayon Day on March 31. While the concept of crayons originated a few centuries ago, what we know as modern crayons dates back to 1903. And, humans have celebrated National Crayon Day since at least 2006.

Does National Crayon Day sound like an event only children can enjoy? Think again! It’s an excellent opportunity to transport your residents back to happy childhood memories. (Do you remember the scent of a freshly opened box of new crayons on your first day of school?)

This topic wasn’t on my original list of articles to write in February. But then a few of you asked for activity ideas for 2-22-22, and I’m glad you did. I’ve had great fun researching this unique date and coming up with activities that I know your residents and staff will enjoy.

First, a bit of background…

We call 2-22-22 a palindrome date because it reads the same both forward and backward. Palindrome dates aren’t all that uncommon. However, what makes 2-22-22 unique is that it also falls on a Tuesday. (Or should we call it Twosday?)

It’s also unusual because all the numbers are the same. The next similar date (3-3-33) won’t arrive for another eleven years. However, it still won’t be as unique because there’s no weekday called Threesday!

Does National Toast Day sound like a boring holiday to celebrate? Think again! Today I’ll share lots of fun activities your residents will surely enjoy.

Toast Day originated in the UK in 2014, and the event quickly spread to other countries. Today we celebrate it every year on the last Thursday of February.

How to celebrate National Toast Day

Begin the day by serving toast for breakfast. My favorite is French toast. Did you know that this delicious dish didn’t originate in France? Your residents will enjoy learning the history of French toast with this article from The Kitchen Project.

You can also serve traditional toast for breakfast. Not just any old toast, but something special. First, begin by offering a variety of interesting breads. (My favorite for toasting is English muffin bread.)
