books about different forms of dementia

Do any of you remember the days when a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease was often kept a family secret? Thankfully, the condition is out in the open nowadays, and it’s easy to find a myriad of resources about this form of dementia. Unfortunately, because there’s so much information available about Alzheimer’s disease, a lot of people think Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are one and the same.

In reality, dementia is a general term used to describe a group of symptoms that affect cognition to the extent that it interferes with a person’s daily life. Although Alzheimer’s disease accounts for about 60-80% of dementia cases, there are also numerous other forms of dementia.

A diagnosis of a type of dementia other than Alzheimer’s disease sometimes leads to a lonely and frustrating journey. While all types of dementia share many similarities, there are also significant differences.

These differences involve causes, symptoms, and progression of the disease. Most importantly, many treatment options and care approaches vary depending upon the type of dementia.

Today I’m sharing books that I believe will provide information and encouragement for those of you who care for someone living with one of these other common types of dementia: Frontotemporal Dementia and Lewy Body Dementia. Please feel free to share any books that you’ve found helpful, too.
