Over the past several months, I’ve highlighted innovative nursing home programs that have won a variety of awards. Today let’s look at four assisted living facilities that received “Best of the Best” awards over the past few years.
“Best of the Best” awards are granted annually by Argentum (formerly the Assisted Living Foundation of America). They recognize senior living facilities that promote the principles of choice, independence, dignity, and quality of life.
As in previous articles, I’ll include a link to each facility. This way, you can contact them directly for more detailed information.
Celebrate Aging Film Festival
Brookdale Senior Living came up with a creative way to change society’s perception of aging. Their residents took on the challenge of creating 5-minute films using only iPad technology. The films celebrate aging and portray aging in a positive light.
Brookdale residents and associates do all aspects of filming. This includes writing, acting, directing, and editing.
The historic Franklin Theater in Franklin, Tennessee, hosts the film festival. Best films in several categories receive awards, including Best Picture, Best Acting, Courage Award, and People’s Choice.
Do you want to take a look at one of their films? My favorite is No Time To Get Old.
Brain Health University
5 Star Senior Living understands the importance of exercising our brains while having fun at the same time. They offer their unique Brain Health University at each of their over 70 communities.
Participants choose from a list of 30 classes on a wide variety of topics. These classes incorporate physical exercise, nutrition education, cognitive stimulation, as well as social interaction.
Class titles include Musical Minds, Humor Me, and PJ Party. Here’s where you can find a full list of brain health classes.
After participants complete 18 classes, they receive a certificate of graduation. In addition, facilities hold special celebrations to honor all graduates.
These Hands
At Benchmark Senior Living Communities, photos of residents’ hands are displayed in public areas. The pictures are accompanied by stories of what the hands have accomplished over the years.
Some benefits noted with this program include:
- Residents discover experiences they have in common with other residents.
- The staff gets to know the residents better.
- Residents and their families feel pride in the resident’s accomplishments.
Grandma’s Cape
Country Meadows Retirement Living wrote and published a story and activity book entitled The Unforgettable Adventures Of Grandma’s Cape. This book helps children and adults understand how their loved one changes during the dementia journey.
Besides making dementia less scary for children, the book helps families stay connected with their loved one. It also promotes discussion between kids and their parents.
Country Meadows provides a copy of the book to all of their residents’ families. You can also get a free copy (while supplies last) by filling out this form.
I hope you’ll take the time to read these past articles about nursing homes that have won awards. You just might discover a program to start at your facility!
