how to host a used book sale

Each month I like to post a fundraising idea to help you raise money for special projects at your nursing home. This month let’s look at a used book sale.

Even though you probably won’t raise an enormous amount of money with this sale, I think it’s still a good fundraiser because it costs you absolutely nothing. Since all of the books are donated, every cent of the profit is yours to keep.

Sounds easy, right? In general, this is an easy event to organize. That being said, I’ve discovered several tips to make a book sale more profitable and enjoyable.

help nursing home residents sleep better

We all know what we feel like after spending a sleepless night tossing and turning in our beds. The next day we feel grumpy, groggy, unproductive, and maybe even a bit confused. So imagine what it’s like for a nursing home resident who sleeps poorly night after night. Today let’s look at some of the causes of insomnia and how we can help our residents enjoy healthy sleep.

Noises in the night

One of my roles as a volunteer is to sit with residents who are nearing death. Occasionally this involves spending time at the nursing home during the night shift. This experience makes me very aware of how noisy a nursing home can be at night.

quotes about nursing homes

Those of you who have been with me for a long time know that I love to read and collect quotes. It seems like many of my readers enjoy quotes, too, because my post about Quotes For Caregivers was shared numerous times.

This month I thought it would be interesting to find quotes about nursing homes to share with you. Sadly, I didn’t find a lot of quotes on this topic and most of them were quite negative.

Interestingly, I did discover a few quotes from famous people that speak of positive and influential experiences with nursing homes during their youth. These are the ones I’m happy to share with you today:

books about different forms of dementia

Do any of you remember the days when a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease was often kept a family secret? Thankfully, the condition is out in the open nowadays, and it’s easy to find a myriad of resources about this form of dementia. Unfortunately, because there’s so much information available about Alzheimer’s disease, a lot of people think Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are one and the same.

In reality, dementia is a general term used to describe a group of symptoms that affect cognition to the extent that it interferes with a person’s daily life. Although Alzheimer’s disease accounts for about 60-80% of dementia cases, there are also numerous other forms of dementia.

A diagnosis of a type of dementia other than Alzheimer’s disease sometimes leads to a lonely and frustrating journey. While all types of dementia share many similarities, there are also significant differences.

nursing home activities for Moon Day

Earlier this week I shared ideas for activities to do with your residents to celebrate a grown-up version of Teddy Picnic Day. Now let’s look at another little-known national holiday I know your residents will enjoy: Moon Day on July 20.

Reminisce

Ask your residents what they remember about the day Apollo 11 landed on the moon in 1969. I’m sure you’ll hear some marvelous stories!

You can also watch this video from NASA of the actual moon landing. (Some of the footage is quite fuzzy, but that was the best technology available at the time.)
