Did your residents have fun planning activities for Emma M. Nutt Day? Today we’ll look at another little-known holiday I know you’ll enjoy in September.

If you ask your residents, I’m sure most of them are familiar with the legend of Johnny Appleseed. But, did you know he was a real person? We celebrate his life on September 26, the date he was born in 1774.

flu shot questions and answers

Those of you who are long-time readers of my blog know that I work part-time as a corporate wellness nurse. One of my roles every autumn is to administer flu vaccinations. We’re gearing up to begin this service in just a few weeks.

Most healthcare facilities highly encourage their employees and volunteers to receive the flu shot every year. So, I thought it might be helpful to share with you the most common questions I’m asked about flu vaccinations.

nursing home volunteer education

As I research volunteer programs at nursing homes around the country, I see many innovative orientation classes for new volunteers. I also discover ingenious ideas for volunteer appreciation events. What’s often missing, however, is ongoing education for those priceless volunteers.

Why is ongoing education so important?

  • It’s easy to forget topics presented during initial orientation when participants are bombarded with so much information.
  • This is a great opportunity for volunteers to discuss experiences, share ideas, and ask questions.
  • It helps people understand that their role is important and that they are a valuable part of the team.
  • Techniques and theories are always changing. This is an opportunity to update everyone on the latest trends in long-term care.
  • It strengthens the relationship between volunteers and their supervisors.
  • Volunteers enjoy getting to know each other better in an informal setting.
  • It helps volunteers stay interested and motivated.

telephone history activities for nursing home residents

Have you ever heard of Emma M. Nutt? She was the first female telephone operator, and we celebrate her life every year on September 1. That’s the day she started working as a phone operator in Boston, Massachusetts in 1878.

I think this is such a fun day to celebrate with your residents. Telephones have changed tremendously over the decades, and your residents will enjoy sharing lots of fascinating memories about those changes.

Click here for the 2022 update!

There’s an exciting week coming up in September, and I hope every one of you will invite your residents to participate. The event is called Active Aging Week, and this year it’s scheduled for September 23-29. That means you’ll want to start planning your activities right away!

What is the week all about?

Active Aging Week is an annual celebration of the positive aspects of aging. Sponsored by the International Council On Active Aging, this year’s theme is “Inspiring Wellness”.

While we might assume that active aging only involves physical activity, the week focuses on all aspects of positive aging. This includes emotional, spiritual, social, and intellectual wellness.
