nursing home best practices awards

I’m happy to report that there was lots of interest in last month’s article about nursing homes in Alabama nominated for Best Practices awards. So, I was excited to discover that a similar program exists in Australia. Except they call their awards “Better Practices”.

Today I’ll highlight a few of my favorites from the past several years. As before, I’ll include a link to each facility so you can contact them directly for more information.

Model Railway Club

Staff and volunteers at Sapphire Care provide a unique and enjoyable activity for their men’s group through the Model Railway Club. Residents from all areas of the nursing home take part in twice-weekly projects.

Several years ago, I helped write a few grants at the nursing home where I now volunteer. Since I enjoy writing, I was excited about this new challenge.

And, yes, it did prove to be a challenge! I was surprised to discover the complexity of the whole grant writing process. But I also experienced the thrill and sense of accomplishment that comes when a grant is approved.

nursing staff in a nursing home

As you go through your day at the nursing home, you’ll encounter a variety of caregivers with many different roles. I always believe it’s helpful to know a bit about the education and responsibilities of each of these employees.

Back in May, we looked at the rehab department in the nursing home. Today, let’s focus on the nursing team.

Licensed Practical Nurse

Most nurses working in nursing homes are LPNs (also called LVNs or Licensed Vocational Nurses in some states). While LPNs possess a wide range of expertise and responsibilities in the nursing home, they need to work under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

how nursing home residents can support hurricane victims

Last year, a friend told me a lovely story about two nursing homes in Worthington, Minnesota. The residents sent encouraging cards and notes to a care facility affected by Hurricane Harvey in Texas. You can read the full story in this newspaper article.

I always feel emotional when I read stories about nursing homes affected by hurricanes. You see, back in 2009, we had to evacuate the nursing home where I worked as a nurse.

In our case, it wasn’t a hurricane we feared. It was major flooding from the mighty Red River that runs between North Dakota and Minnesota.
