What To Do If You Suspect Abuse

nursing home abuse and neglect

I’ll begin this article with a personal story.

Many years ago, at age 16, I started working at my very first job as a nursing assistant in a nursing home. During one particular evening shift, I was working with two other nursing assistants who were a few years older than me.

As I walked down the hallway, I saw them talking with a resident who was diagnosed with what they then called “senile dementia”. One caregiver pointed out that the resident’s bald head was covered with wrinkles.

They giggled and call him “Pruney Top”. The teasing continued for a few minutes even though the resident was becoming annoyed.

This incident still haunts me to this day. Why? Because it represents emotional abuse, and I did nothing to stop it.

nursing home fundraising ideas

Today I’m sharing five new fundraising ideas from a variety of healthcare facilities. I think you’ll find that they’re perfect for raising money at your nursing home, too.

As before, I’m including links to the website of each organization. This allows you to contact them directly for additional details.

Antiques Valuation Day

Do you have antiques or collectibles in your home? Are you curious to know their value? Kate’s Home Nursing in England creatively combines a free antique appraisal with a fundraiser for their organization.

The public brings in their family treasures for an appraisal by an antique expert. Appraisals are done at no charge, but donations to Kate’s Home Nursing are encouraged.

Funds raised will support in-home hospice care. Services are provided free of charge, primarily due to fundraising activities such as this one.

encouraging nursing home residents to eat

At this time of year, food adds so much enjoyment to our holidays. I’m already dreaming of our traditional family Thanksgiving dinner: ham, mashed potatoes, corn, dinner rolls, pumpkin pie, and all the rest of the trimmings.

Because of this, it’s hard to see our memory care residents show little or no interest in food, especially over the holidays. Today I’ll share 8 tips to help you encourage your residents to eat.

  • Provide a pleasant environment

As you prepare to begin a meal, stop for a moment and survey the atmosphere in the dining room. Remember that residents living with dementia may become easily distracted. Background noise such as TV, loud voices, inappropriate music, or noisy equipment quickly leads to poor food intake.

award winning nursing home programs

Out of all the topics I write about for my blog, I believe this one has become my favorite. That’s because it’s so much fun to read about all the amazing programs nursing homes come up with to enrich the lives of their residents.

Today I’m featuring four nursing homes that have won OPTIMA awards. Sponsored by the publication I Advance Senior Care, these national awards honor organizations that provide exceptional programming and person-centered care. As before, I’m including a link to each of the winning facilities, so you can contact them directly for more information.

The Truth About Pop Tabs

collecting pop can tabs for charity

One afternoon I walked into the break room of the nursing home where I volunteer, and a new display on a table caught my eye. It included a canister along with a sign. “Donate your pop tabs here”, it said. “One tab provides one minute of chemotherapy for a child.”

Hmm. While this sounds like a wonderful program, I knew it couldn’t possibly be true. We quickly realized that a well-meaning employee had fallen for an urban legend that has gone around for decades.

There are a few different versions of the myth. One says the pop tabs provide free dialysis treatments. Another claims the tabs will be melted down to make a wheelchair for a child in need.
