online craft classes for nursing home residents

The other day, I was talking with a friend about online classes. I told her how much I enjoy taking free MOOCs as well as the free online classes offered through Khan Academy.

My friend then told me about free online craft classes she loves to take. I didn’t even know these existed. But I checked them out, and now I’m taking a class that’s teaching me how to make beautiful one-of-a-kind greeting cards.

If you love to create homemade Christmas gifts, then I know you’ll enjoy these classes. Besides, I think they would be terrific to share with your residents.

You could take a class with a group of residents and then do a craft project together. Or you could offer the courses to individual residents who wish to learn a new skill or enhance a skill they already enjoy.

hidden signs of dementia

November is Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. This seems like a good time to share an article I was honored to write for SixtyandMe.

Many people are concerned about the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Will it affect me someday? Or will it affect someone I love? What are the signs I should watch for?

You’ve probably seen the list of 10 Warning Signs from the Alzheimer’s Association. But did you know researchers are discovering more unusual early signs of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia?

Changes in balance or gait

Studies done in both the United States and France reveal that frequent falls may be an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease. The studies looked at people who otherwise appeared healthy but displayed Alzheimer’s-related lesions in their brains. Their fall rate proved to be more than twice that of the average person their age. [Read more…] about 4 Hidden Signs Of Dementia

Black Friday gifts for yourself

I wasn’t planning to write this post, but I just learned that one of my favorite websites is hosting a big sale through Cyber Monday. If every gift on your shopping list is for somebody else, then this post is for you.

As nursing home volunteers (or caregivers), you’re always giving to others. But you also need to find opportunities to take care of yourself and refill your own cup.

That’s where Crystal Paine comes in. I’ve taken several of her online classes over the years, and I find them to be incredibly helpful. Crystal’s classes are very affordable with original prices varying from $15 to $37.

nursing home activities for Monkey Day

Do you ever start to feel a bit burned out by all of the holiday activities at the nursing home during December? I know I’ve felt this way.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I love celebrating the beautiful Christmas season. But when we have nonstop Christmas activities, it starts to feel a bit overwhelming.

That’s why I like to toss in a few activities that are completely unrelated to Christmas. One example is World Monkey Day on December 14.

Apparently, Monkey Day started as a joke at the University of Michigan in 2000. Over the years, it expanded to become a day to raise awareness about protecting monkeys as an important part of nature.

Check out these ideas for activities your residents are sure to enjoy on Monkey Day:

nursing home activities for St. Nicholas Day

Some of you will be mortified by what I am about to tell you. Okay, here goes. I never told my children that Santa Claus is real.

And you know what? They turned out just fine. In fact, they turned out better than fine.

What I told my children was the true story of St. Nicholas. We hear little about St. Nicholas these days, but I’ll bet some of your residents can share fond memories from when they were children.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with St. Nicholas, here’s a brief history.

The man we came to know as St. Nicholas was born in the third century in what is now the country of Turkey. He became a monk, and later a bishop, and was known as a very kind man who helped people who were poor or sick.
