Have you enjoyed the fundraising ideas I’ve shared over the past year? I hope they make a difference in the lives of your residents by providing money for a few special projects or activities.

As I’ve searched online for fundraisers, I’ve noticed that hospice programs often come up with the most creative ideas. That being said, I know these events can easily be adapted to support nursing homes, too.

How Nursing Home Residents Can Encourage Others

In this day of smartphones and social media, old-fashioned letter writing seems like a lost art. Nonetheless, I’ll bet many of your residents would enjoy the opportunity to send words of encouragement to people through letters and cards.

Today I’m introducing you to two organizations that welcome participation from nursing homes and other care facilities.

 

Soldier’s Angels

This nonprofit organization supports military families, deployed service members, and veterans. These are just a few of the many services they provide:

  • Care packages for deployed soldiers
  • Visits to hospitalized vets
  • Adaptive technology for injured vets (ex: voice-controlled laptops)
  • Box lunches and hygiene kits for homeless vets

I believe one of the best ways to enhance the quality of care in nursing homes around the world is to share our best practices. Today I’m featuring programs that recently won Best Practice Awards in North Carolina.

These awards are given out by the Friends of Residents in Long Term Care. They recognize nursing home programs that promote person-centered values, support the rights of residents, and improve quality of care.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve noticed a significant increase in the number of people who are reading a popular post from last year. It’s entitled, “Best Gift Ideas For Nursing Home Residents“, and I wrote it to prepare for Christmas.

This tells me that many of you are shopping for Christmas gifts for family and friends who live in senior care communities. I know from personal experience that this can be a challenge. After all, you want the gift to be enjoyable, meaningful, and it needs to fit into what is often a small living area.

As I look to 2019, I would greatly appreciate your feedback on my blog. My ultimate goal in starting NursingHomeVolunteer.com was to enhance the lives of nursing home residents.

I initially hoped to do this by educating, inspiring, and encouraging nursing home volunteers. As time goes by, I’m discovering that lots of other people associated with nursing homes are also reading and participating in my blog. This includes family members, activity professionals, nurses, social workers, students, and many others.

So, no matter what your role, I would love to hear from you. If you’ll take just a few minutes to respond to this brief survey, your input will help enhance the lives of the residents whom we serve.
