Save money on craft supplies

Are you excited about the craft ideas I shared in Tuesday’s post? If your residents complete any of these projects, I would love to hear about the results.

I promised to share lots of ways you can save money on your craft supplies, so here goes!

1.  Save on taxes

Check to see if your nursing home is exempt from paying local/state sales tax. Many states allow this for nonprofit organizations. With tax rates higher than 10% in some areas, the savings could be significant.

Several states offer tax-free holidays around the time school starts. You can save money on supplies even if you’re not using them for school.

Do you have residents at your nursing home who love to knit, sew, or do other craft projects? Today I’m sharing 3 ways they can enjoy their hobbies while helping other people at the same time.

Project Linus

Project Linus distributes blankets to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or in other situations where they would benefit from a warm blanket. Local drop-off centers collect handmade blankets. From there, they go to children in shelters, hospitals, or through contact with social service agencies.

The organization accepts a wide variety of blankets such as knitted or crocheted afghans, quilts, or tied fleece blankets. This basic no-sew fleece blanket pattern is especially popular with nursing home residents.

how to be an eye donor

Nursing home volunteers have big hearts. That’s why I like to share a variety of special opportunities to help you make a positive difference in the lives of other people. Today, let’s look at how you can give someone the priceless gift of sight by becoming an eye donor.

Why should I become a donor?

When you donate your eyes upon death, the primary use will be for corneal transplants. This helps to restore or improve vision for people with corneas damaged by disease, injury, or infection. (The cornea is the clear surface that covers the front of the eye.)

Eye banks might also retrieve tissue for medical research or to educate healthcare professionals. In a smaller number of cases, the sclera can also be transplanted. (The sclera is the white part of the eye.) At this time, it is not possible to transplant an entire eye.

Are Older People Happier?

December 30, 2018 by Diane Leave a Comment

Older people are happier

As you consider the residents at the nursing home, do you look forward to growing old? Perhaps not.

When interacting with an older person, the first thing we usually notice is their physical impairments. Certainly, these are common among the elderly.

So you might be surprised to learn that numerous studies indicate older people tend to be happier than young and middle-aged adults.

I hope you’ll take the time to watch this fascinating video. (It only lasts 12 minutes.) You just might come out with a different perspective on aging.
