Out-Of-Pocket Activity Supply Survey

August 25, 2019 by Diane Leave a Comment

With many schools now back in session, I’m hearing a lot about teachers buying supplies for their classrooms with their own money.  I recently read an article reporting that the average teacher in the U.S. spends around $479 per year on supplies for which they aren’t reimbursed.

A couple of days ago, I heard this topic discussed on an early morning news program. One of the reporters made an interesting comment. He said that teaching is the only profession where people need to pay out-of-pocket for supplies used by the people whom they serve.

Here’s my concern

I deeply respect teachers, and I feel that more needs to be done to find other sources to cover classroom expenses. However, I must disagree with this reporter’s statement.

September nursing home activities

Most people believe that this phrase is the official motto of the United States Postal Service: “Neither rain nor snow nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”

Is that correct? Well, not exactly. The phrase became popular after it was inscribed on the new main post office building in New York City that opened on September 7, 1914.

As a result, September 7 has become a day to celebrate the postal service. Despite occasional complaints of lost mail or the rising cost of postage stamps, it’s pretty amazing to think that the USPS delivers an average of 484.8 million pieces of mail each day.

weight loss challenge fundraiser

I frequently hear from nursing home volunteers and staff who are looking for creative fundraising ideas.  Today I want to share a fundraiser we’ve done at a couple of nursing homes where I worked in the past. It’s the weight loss challenge for charity.

I think this is the perfect time of year to begin a weight loss challenge. Summer vacations are behind us, and life is returning to a more steady routine. Besides, if people to lose weight now, they’ll have plenty of time to see a significant loss before the holidays.

reduced sense of smell with aging

Stop for a moment and think about your 5 senses: smell, hearing, touch, sight, and taste. Consider how much enjoyment each of them brings to your life.

Unfortunately, all of these senses decline to some degree as we age. This is an important consideration as we work to help our residents experience their best possible quality of life.

Over the next few months, let’s look at those 5 senses. We’ll learn how the aging process affects each of them and what we can do to incorporate sensory-stimulating activities into our daily care.
