Alzheimer's Day

In these days of COVID-19, it’s easy to focus on the pandemic and forget about the other challenges people face on a day-to-day basis. One example is Alzheimer’s disease.

That’s why, as you plan your activities for September, I hope you’ll find ways to honor residents and their caregivers on World Alzheimer’s Day. Initially launched in the UK in 1994, countries all around the world now observe this special day on September 21.

Today I’m sharing eight of my favorite World Alzheimer’s Day activities. By getting involved, you’ll help spread awareness of Alzheimer’s disease. You’ll also support people living with dementia and their caregivers.

funny quotes about growing older

The world seems awfully serious these days, so I decided we need some humor. That being said, I’ll admit to having a bit of hesitation while writing this post.

Nowadays, we’re so sensitive about possibly offending someone with our words—and rightly so. As a result, I became concerned that readers might accuse me of ageism for seeing something funny about growing older.

But here’s the thing. As we age, every one of us experiences not-so-fun changes of one type or another. And isn’t it better to celebrate the humor in these changes rather than pretending they don’t exist?

I hope these quotes bring a slice of healthy humor to your day. Be sure to share them with your residents, too!

acts of kindness to do at work

A few days ago, I read a fascinating article on the Healthy Workforce Institute website. The author begins by addressing the meanness and cruelty we see in today’s world.

Instead of allowing this negativity to drag us down, she urges us to respond with kindness. In particular, she invites each of us to start a kindness revolution in our workplace.

The article got me thinking about specific acts of kindness we can do for our co-workers. Here’s the list I brainstormed. I would love to hear your ideas, too!

Successful online fundraisers

Now, more than ever, we need to provide interesting and meaningful activities for our residents. And those activities cost money!

Many nursing homes are tightening their activity budgets as they face increased costs related to the pandemic. As a result, we may need to come up with our own money. Yet, hosting fundraisers is often difficult during this time of social distancing when opportunities for in-person events are rare.

8 Ways To Improve Teamwork Between Departments

Now and then, I like to ask my readers for input as to topics they would like to see addressed on my blog. One of the most common requests involves how to encourage various departments at the nursing home to get along with each other.

This is the topic I was working on in January when I received word that the nursing home where I volunteered was on fire. So, I put my notes aside and just recently picked them up again.

In hindsight, I’m glad I waited to publish this article. That’s because now, more than ever before, we all need to get along to survive the pandemic.
