communicating with people who live with dementia

Recently, an acquaintance asked for tips on communicating with residents who live with dementia. This individual floated to a wing where she rarely works at the nursing home, and she had questions about how to communicate effectively when a resident experiences confusion.

As I spoke with her, I realized that I’ve never specifically addressed this important topic in any of the over 400 articles I’ve posted on my blog. Yet, I should have, because many people struggle with the unique challenges of communicating with people living with dementia.

Today I’m sharing ten communication techniques I’ve found helpful over the years. I would love to see you add your tips in the comment section.

nursing home fundraiser for Valentine's DayMany of you have told me you’re looking for fundraising ideas to help pay for special activities for your residents. Yet, it isn’t easy to do many of your traditional fundraisers while social distancing.

That’s why I’m reposting this popular article I shared a couple of years ago. I especially enjoy this fundraiser because not only does it raise money, but it also adds fun to Valentine’s Day for residents and staff. Families also appreciate this event because it allows them to do something special for their loved one when they can’t be there in person.

How To Celebrate Thomas Crapper Day

Thomas Crapper Day

As you plan your activities for January, here’s an event that’s guaranteed to catch your residents’ attention. I’m talking about Thomas Crapper Day on January 27.

Many people wrongly believe that Mr. Crapper invented the flush toilet. However, that honor goes to Sir John Harington way back in 1596.

Thomas Crapper, an English plumber born in the 1800s, invented several products that helped modernize the restroom experience. He also opened the world’s first showroom featuring toilets and other bathroom fixtures.

Why is this significant? Because he did this during an era when people were bashful about bodily functions and didn’t want to talk about anything related to the restroom.

I know your residents will enjoy these activities to celebrate the legacy of Thomas Crapper.

Award-winning programs that benefit elders

Several times over the years, I’ve featured articles about senior living communities that won awards for developing innovative programs to benefit their residents and staff. With all the chaos brought on by the pandemic, I wondered if anyone had time to honor organizations with awards in 2020.

After a bit of research, I’m happy to tell you that many senior living communities continue to develop new and exciting programs, and they’re being honored for their efforts. Today I’m sharing 3 of my favorites. I’ll also include a link to each organization, so you can contact them directly if you would like more information.
