The end is in sight! Within the next several months, the pandemic will finally end. Senior living communities will once again open their doors, and our residents can enjoy more normal activities.

With this in mind, I’ve been searching for creative off-campus activities we can offer our residents. So I was excited to stumble upon several articles that shared ideas for elders to serve as volunteer “secret shoppers”. Their purpose is to check out local businesses to assure they are elder-friendly.

The secret shoppers visit a variety of businesses. This might include retail stores, restaurants, and service providers such as health clubs.

Love in old age

There’s something precious and unique about love in old age. In honor of Valentine’s Day, I hope you’ll share these lovely quotes with the residents at your nursing home who have found this special kind of love.

  • Happiness in marriage is a moment by moment choice. A decision to love, forgive, grow and grow old together. (Fawn Weaver)
  • It doesn’t matter how old people are. It matters if they love each other and have fun with each other. (unknown)

Acts of kindness

When I asked my readers to suggest topics for future blog posts, one reader requested service project ideas she can share with her residents. The timing seems perfect since Random Acts of Kindness Day is coming up on February 17.

Back in 2019, I put together a list of 70 acts of kindness your residents can do for others. I realize some of them might not be doable during the pandemic. However, I know you’ll find several projects your residents can do right away.

Reader survey

The survey is now closed. Thanks so much to everyone who participated!

Today I must share a confession. After posting over 400 articles on my blog during the past three years, I feel like I’m running out of things to write about.

That’s why this seems like the perfect time to do a reader survey. When I’ve done surveys in the past, my readers have come up with excellent topic ideas that never occurred to me.

Today’s survey has only five questions, and it will take about three minutes to complete. You’ll help me get to know my readers better and ensure my blog meets your needs.

Thank you so much for taking part!

consultant pharmacist in nursing home

As you work or volunteer at the nursing home, I think it’s interesting and important to understand the roles of the various people who serve our residents. In the past, I’ve featured the nursing team, rehab staff, and the social worker.

Today I’m introducing someone who often works in the background and may not be familiar to many nursing home staff or residents. I’m talking about the consultant pharmacist.

Federal guidelines require nursing homes to employ the services of a consultant pharmacist. Yet, I’m guessing that few people understand the enormous role they play in assuring our residents’ highest quality of life.
