When I volunteered at the nursing home, they always provided transportation for residents to attend clinic appointments. However, they also required that a family member or friend accompany the resident throughout the appointment. On those rare occasions when the resident had no one to help, the nursing home looked to us as volunteers to accompany them.

Now, as a cancer patient, I’m the one who often needs an escort to appointments. I’ve learned a few lessons along the way, and I hope my experiences will help all of us to provide better support for our residents when they need to visit a clinic.

Woman receiving medication through IV in her arm

The past month brought a mind-boggling array of tests, procedures, and consultations as I’ve faced my new cancer diagnosis. I started chemo, and I’m finally reaching the point where my life’s schedule is settling into a new normal.

I believe every challenge we face in life is an opportunity to learn new lessons. So, as I maneuver this new journey, I plan to look for those lessons and see how we might use them to better support our nursing home residents.

While everyone’s cancer journey is different, these are four lessons I’ve learned so far:

Pink breast cancer ribbon on green background

Some of you may have noticed that I’ve been absent from my blog over the past couple of weeks. After not feeling well for several days, I ended up in the hospital and came out with a diagnosis I never expected. I have metastatic breast cancer.

I’ll meet with an oncologist on Wednesday, and we’ll come up with a treatment plan. In the meantime, I’ve been trying to work on my blog. But my brain feels overwhelmed, and I realize I need to take a break.

Even though I probably won’t share a lot of new posts over the next few weeks, I hope you’ll continue to visit my blog. Perhaps this is a good time to catch up on the over 400 posts I’ve shared over the past three years.

I know God will walk with me through this new journey, and I know there will be lessons to learn as I transition from caregiver to patient. I’ll keep you posted.

successful fundraisers

Recently I asked my readers to let me know what type of article on my blog they find most helpful. Can you guess what came in at number one? It was fundraising ideas!

I’m not surprised. I know many nursing homes struggle to find the money to provide enjoyable and meaningful activities for their residents. This is especially true during the pandemic.

Over the past three years, I’ve featured over 100 fundraising ideas on my blog. You can find all of them in the archives.

Recently, I’ve primarily posted ideas for virtual fundraisers you can host while social distancing. However, in anticipation of the pandemic soon ending, today I’m sharing several new ideas for events you can host when nursing homes can open their doors once again.
