The past two years brought unique financial challenges to senior living communities. The high cost of purchasing pandemic-related supplies, compounded by costs associated with staffing shortages, resulted in these organizations being forced to tighten their budgets.

That’s where we, as volunteers, can help! Today I’m sharing four more fundraisers you can host to raise money for special activities and equipment to enhance the lives of your residents. (You’ll also find over 100 fundraising ideas in my blog archives.)

As always, I’m including a link to each organization that came up with the idea, so you can contact them for more details.

Does National Toast Day sound like a boring holiday to celebrate? Think again! Today I’ll share lots of fun activities your residents will surely enjoy.

Toast Day originated in the UK in 2014, and the event quickly spread to other countries. Today we celebrate it every year on the last Thursday of February.

How to celebrate National Toast Day

Begin the day by serving toast for breakfast. My favorite is French toast. Did you know that this delicious dish didn’t originate in France? Your residents will enjoy learning the history of French toast with this article from The Kitchen Project.

You can also serve traditional toast for breakfast. Not just any old toast, but something special. First, begin by offering a variety of interesting breads. (My favorite for toasting is English muffin bread.)

During the past two years, it feels like we’ve focused so hard on battling COVID we haven’t had the time or energy to develop a lot of new and creative programs for our residents.

I’m hopeful things will settle down in the new year, and we can get back to some semblance of normal life. That’s why today I’m sharing a hodgepodge of innovative programs I discovered while researching ideas for my blog. I hope you’ll try at least one of them in 2022!

Red Santa hat with the words "What's your New Year's resolution?"

A year ago, I felt confident that the pandemic’s end was in sight, and life would soon return to normal. Did you think so, too? But, here we are, entering another new year with COVID looming over our lives.

As I see it, we can respond in one of two ways. We can dread what the new year might bring and simply endure whatever comes our way. Or, we can pull ourselves up by the britches and make 2022 the best year possible.

When Christmas Doesn’t Feel So Merry

As I addressed my Christmas cards this year, it shocked me to realize how many significant losses occurred in 2021. Two of my friends lost their husbands last spring. Another is facing the first Christmas without her mom. One friend lost a sister, and another lost her brother. And my cousin’s daughter died last month. For these people, Christmas won’t feel all merry and bright.

I know some of your residents experienced losses over the past year, too. And perhaps you have a friend living in a nursing home who is also grieving a loss. That’s why I put together a list of ways we can support people through this difficult time. Keep in mind that everyone grieves differently, and what is comforting for one person might not be for another.
