How are you doing with the New Year’s resolutions you started in January? Even if you threw in the towel several weeks ago, all is not lost!

Did you know that spring is a good time to reevaluate our goals for the year? That’s because as the weather improves, we often feel more energetic and more motivated.

I hope you gave your residents an opportunity to create New Year’s resolutions, too. Now is the perfect time to check in and see how they’re doing.

When I shared my New Year’s resolutions with you in December, I promised to post an update in three months. I won’t bore you with an in-depth analysis of each of my goals. However, I’ll share a few discoveries I made that I believe will help you and your residents with your resolutions, too.

Do you ever feel helpless when you see all the unsettling things going on in our world today? I know I do. I feel like I want to make things better, but I don’t know where to begin. Perhaps some of your residents feel that way, too, when they watch the daily news.

That’s why I’m excited about a special day coming up on April 28. I hope you and your residents will get excited, too!

It’s called the Do One Give Challenge, and it’s sponsored by an organization called 365Give. Perhaps you remember me mentioning this organization in the past. That’s because it was an inspiration for my New Year’s resolution to do more acts of kindness in 2022.

World record written in blue and red.

Has anyone from your senior living community ever broken a Guinness World Record? Today I’m highlighting residents and staff from around the world who have done just that.

(Please note that other individuals or groups may have set new records since these events occurred.)

In 2013, St. John’s House in the UK set a record for the oldest choir in the world. The 13 residents singing in the choir (12 women and 1 man) boasted a combined age of 1180 years.

Benchmark Senior Living in Ridgefield, Connecticut, created the longest friendship bracelet in 2016. It measured almost 2167 ft.

Hand holding decorated lunch bags.

I’m so pleased with your positive responses to the article I shared in January about my at-home volunteer projects! So today I’ll share what I’m doing this month. You can easily do any of these projects with the residents of your senior living community. Or, you can do them as a family or as an individual.

Letters Against Isolation

I actually started working on this project in February, and I plan to continue it on a long-term basis. Letters Against Isolation invites volunteers to write uplifting letters to elders in several countries. They include residents of nursing homes, independent/assisted living, memory care, senior centers, and recipients of Meals on Wheels.

Drawing of a clenched fist with a pink cancer ribbon.

Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of my cancer diagnosis. I know it’s been quite a while since I’ve posted an update. That’s because things have been pretty stable over the past few months. Cancer has become more like a chronic condition for me rather than an acute illness.

When I was first diagnosed, I told you I would look for lessons to be learned from cancer and share them with you. If you click on the “cancer journey” tab on my blog, you can read about some of those lessons.

Today I’ll share another lesson, hoping my thoughts will help you support a friend, family member, or one of your nursing home residents living with a chronic illness.
