We’re halfway through our 12-month journey of helping our residents do acts of kindness for others. I would love to hear what you’ve done so far! Please let me know in the comment section.
Now here’s our list for July:
1. Make sandwiches for people who go hungry. Here’s an example from Minnesota.
2. Help residents arrange a blood drive at your facility. Donations tend to go down during the summer, so donors are especially needed now.
3. Many children go into emergency foster care with few possessions from home. Contact your local social services agency. Find out if your residents can host a donation drive for items to put in comfort bags (toys, pajamas, etc.).
4. Get a group of residents together and surprise caregivers with a flash mob song of appreciation.
5. Contact your local Habitat For Humanity office. Find out if your residents can help by baking cookies or preparing lunches for volunteers. Some offices also need help stuffing envelopes for mailings.
6. Provide supplies so residents can create pretty signs that feature encouraging quotes. Post them in public restrooms at your facility. (Where else can you find such a captive audience?)
7. Encourage residents to read to other elders who cannot do so because of disability or visual impairment.
