While weighted blankets have been around for many years, I’ve recently noticed that they’re growing in popularity. So, this seems like a good time to look at the benefits of weighted blankets and a few options for purchasing one of your own.
What is a weighted blanket?
These blankets contain small pellets (usually glass or plastic) that create a gentle, even pressure across your body. Many people describe the sensation as similar to getting a hug or being held. Known as Deep Touch Pressure, this causes our bodies to release chemicals that promote relaxation.
Who can benefit from weighted blankets?
Users of weighted blankets report a reduction in symptoms associated with several conditions. These include:
- Restless leg syndrome
- PTSD
- Pain
- ADHD
- Autism
- Stress
- Anxiety disorders
Also, these blankets are becoming increasingly popular in long-term care facilities. This is especially true at a time when we’re looking for non-drug therapies to help reduce the difficult symptoms experienced by many people living with dementia. For some residents, weighted bed blankets, shoulder wraps, or lap blankets have been found to help reduce anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia.

How do I choose the right weighted blanket?
Unlike traditional blankets, the correct weighted blanket size is based on your body weight. As a general rule, the weight of your blanket should be a pound or two more than 10% of your body weight. (Note that weighted blankets are not safe for babies.)
Of course, for shoulder wraps or lap blankets that cover only part of the body, you’ll want to use a lighter weight. Also, especially for an elderly person, be sure the blanket doesn’t limit a person’s freedom of movement in any way.
