The past two years brought unique financial challenges to senior living communities. The high cost of purchasing pandemic-related supplies, compounded by costs associated with staffing shortages, resulted in these organizations being forced to tighten their budgets.
That’s where we, as volunteers, can help! Today I’m sharing four more fundraisers you can host to raise money for special activities and equipment to enhance the lives of your residents. (You’ll also find over 100 fundraising ideas in my blog archives.)
As always, I’m including a link to each organization that came up with the idea, so you can contact them for more details.
Celebrity Day
Was a famous person born or raised in your community? Then you’ll like this idea from Chautauqua Adult Day Care in Jamestown, New York. Supporters raised money by celebrating Lucille Ball, who was born in their community.
They held the event at a local restaurant. Besides a delicious dinner, other activities included a Lucy look-alike contest, Lucy trivia, music, and a Chinese Auction.
Second Hand Fashion Show
A couple of years ago, I shared an article about how you can host a successful fashion show in your senior living community. Albany Community Hospice in Australia came up with another version of this event and used it as a fundraiser.
Supporters of the hospice asked friends to donate gently used clothing and accessories, then hosted a fashion show and sale. Items went to the highest bidder.
Hike For Hospice
Hospice Cape Breton in Canada raised money by hosting a hike through a local recreational park. Participants learned about wildlife and watched a variety of demonstrations by naturalists. They also received tree seedlings to plant along the trail or at home.
In addition, the event featured activities and entertainment for children. Funds were raised through sponsorships and entry fees.
Farm Stock For Hospice
If you live in a farming community, you can borrow an idea from Franklin Hospice in New Zealand. They recruit area cattle farmers who agree to choose a calf at birth, raise it, and then donate the proceeds to the hospice when they sell the calf.
I can see where you could also do this with pigs, sheep, turkeys, or other farm animals. And, to get your residents more involved, you could invite a farmer to visit your nursing home and talk with them about the joys and challenges of modern farming.
Do you have a unique and successful fundraiser in your senior living community? I would love to feature it on my blog. Please let me know in the comment section!
