This winter is proving to be a bitterly cold one here in the Midwest and also in other parts of the country. I’m so ready for spring, and I know our residents are, too! With this in mind, I decided it’s a good time to lift everyone’s spirits by looking to the future and planning outdoor spring activities.
Spending time outdoors offers so many benefits to our residents. It improves their mood, encourages physical activity, improves sleep, and promotes socialization. I know today’s post will offer several new activities for your residents to enjoy.
- Assist residents to create and fly their own kites.
- Attend a car show.
- Go yard sale shopping.
- Invite an artist to do an outdoor painting class.
- Enjoy a tea party out on the patio.
- Take a trip to the zoo and see the baby animals.
- Sit outside and share spring trivia.
- Bring your routine exercise classes outdoors.
- Invite the kids from the childcare center to go outside with the residents to blow bubbles.
- Go for a walk around the neighborhood. Soak up the scenes, sounds, and scents of this beautiful time of the year.
- Sit outside and make bird feeders, then hang them in the trees.
- Go on a trip to a restaurant that has an outdoor dining area.
- Invite musicians to put on an informal outdoor concert.
- Create a straw bale garden.
- If it’s available in your community, go on an open-air trolly tour to see the sights.
- Invite someone from a nursery or garden center to do an outdoor gardening class.
- Go fishing.
- Play yard games like bean bag toss or lawn bowling.
- Pick dandelions.
- Sit outside and look for images in the clouds, just like you did as a child.

We help our residents get into a big circle outside in the courtyard. Then the kids from the daycare center stand in the middle and play catch with the residents using big beach balls. They all have a blast!
