Did you get a chance to check out the books I’ve been reading during this time of social distancing? If not, you can find them here:
Over the past month, I’ve read two more books that I highly recommend, especially for people involved in healthcare.
This book follows the life of Dr. Paul Farmer as he fulfills his mission of changing the world by curing infectious diseases. As we learn about the cultures of the people and the hostile diseases they endure, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Yet, Dr. Farmer earnestly and patiently goes about his work conquering one mountain at a time.
I came through this book feeling amazed that one person could accomplish so much in a lifetime. (Dr. Farmer continues to practice medicine.) It made me wonder what our world could be like if each of us follows our dreams with so much passion.
The Spirit Catches You And You Fall Down
This is the story of a Hmong family living in California and caring for their child, who develops a puzzling seizure disorder. Throughout the book, we see the harm done by people with good intentions when cultural understanding and communication are sorely lacking.
The book prompts me to step back and consider the cultural backgrounds of my residents and their families. Often, we label something as a challenging behavior when, in reality, the actions are understandable when we consider cultural beliefs and norms.
On a side note, when you finish reading this book, be sure to do a Google search and find out what happens after the book ends. It will surprise you!
What have you been reading while social distancing? I would love to hear your suggestions about which book I should read next!
