With National Nursing Home Week coming up soon, I thought it would be helpful to share a few facts about nursing homes in the U.S.
1. When surveyed, the thing people like best about working in a nursing home is the relationships they form with the residents.
2. In 2021, the average cost of a private room in a nursing home was $297 per day. That comes out to $108,405 in one year.
3. Seventy percent of people over the age of 65 will require long-term care at some point.
4. The most common diagnosis among nursing home residents is hypertension.
5. On average, 67% of residents are women and 33% are men.
6. When surveyed, the thing people fear most about entering a nursing home is a loss of independence.
7. The most common complaints reported by nursing home residents are slow response to call lights, quality of food, and social isolation.
8. There are approximately 15,600 nursing homes in the United States.
9. The oldest nursing home resident in the United States is 114-year-old Bessie Hendricks, who lives at Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City, Iowa.
10. Seventy percent of nursing home residents are single (widowed, divorced, or never married).
11. The leading cause of death among nursing home residents is pneumonia.
12. About 48% of nursing home residents have some form of dementia.
